About Mike
Mike believes that psychology is a joint effort between a person and their therapist. Psychology is not about labelling; it is about helping people understand their own strengths and resilience. Respect for the client’s personal and cultural knowledge is at the centre of the caring relationship. From that respect change and improvement grows. Many mental health challenges have social and historical roots. With practice, clients can learn to move beyond the past towards a healthier life. Mike completed his Master of Education degree in Educational Psychology in 2007 and he has been a Registered Psychologist with the Saskatchewan College of Psychologists (#751) since 2008. He holds an Authorized Practice Endorsement (APE), which allows Mike to make a diagnosis. He is an approved mental health service provider through Indigenous Services Canada. Mike has worked in public school settings and in private practice both in Northern Saskatchewan and in Regina. He has been in the education field for more than 20 years. Prior to working in education, Mike worked on policy and advocacy in federal and provincial government institutions.
Services Offered
Counselling:
Counselling services are provided from adolescence through to adulthood. Mike believes in a person-centered philosophy to help you find strength and develop new skills. Every client is an expert of their lived experience. Counselling is not about finding disorders or dysfunction. It is about recognizing the obstacles in your path and finding ways to overcome those obstacles. His approaches to counselling typically involve solution-focused and cognitive behavioural methods. Other ideas are brought in as needed.
Assessment:
Psychological assessment is about clarifying what is impacting a client’s behaviour, learning and/or development. The goal of an assessment is a better understanding of how to help growth and progress. This may result in a diagnosis when appropriate. Mike has years of experience in assessment for learning disabilities, Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder, intellectual disabilities, and behaviourally complex children and youth. A thorough, individualized assessment results in a plan forward for individuals and/or parents.
Group Training:
Mike has provided customized group training for volunteers, community-based organizations, and health regions. Topics have included listening and communication skills, assertiveness, relationships and boundaries, working with vulnerable groups, understanding anxiety, addictions, and self-care. Training length and content can be tailored to meet the needs of your organization.
