What is Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction?

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, (MBSR), was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the Center for Mindfulness, University of Massachusetts Medical School (CFM). MBSR is an intensive 8-week, 9-session training in mindfulness awareness. Groups meet weekly for 2.5 hours and for an all-day session between weeks six and seven. Guided instruction in various mindfulness practices is provided, including sitting and walking meditation, the body scan, gentle yoga, and other guided meditations. These practices are enhanced through inquiry exercises, small and large group discussion, daily home practice assignments, guided audio files, and practice materials.

Who should study Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction?

People choose to participate in the MBSR course for a variety of reasons. These include stress (work-related, school, family, illness, aging, grief, uncertainly about the future, and feeling “out of control) … medical conditions (chronic pain, high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, cancer, heart disease, asthma, digestive difficulties, headaches, etc.) … emotional distress (anxiety, panic, depression, fatigue and insomnia) …prevention and wellness (health enhancement, self-care and wellness focused on prevention and learning the “how” of taking good care of yourself while feeling a better sense of balance).
